Some things really do get better with time. Especially TV shows. Sometimes a show stumbles out of the gate so badly, you can't believe it'll ever become watchable. And then you check back a year or two later and boom — it's become the best show ever. Which show had the worst first season, before achieiving greatness?

Getting offers to write for Indian TV shows: Umera Ahmed

New Delhi: Pakistani screenwriter Umera Ahmed, whose romantic saga 'Zindagi Gulzar Hai' became a hit here, has been getting offers from Indian TV channels but the author says she finds herself "incompetent" to pen shows that run for years. 

"None of my shows have ever touched 30 episodes, so I don't feel comfortable or competent enough to write for such long shows. There are daily soaps in Pakistan too but writers like me who also write novels can't drag a story to 100 episodes," she told PTI in a telephonic interview.

Because anything can become a TV show these days, Terry Gilliam's "12 Monkeys" is going to be a weekly thing on SyFy. And while our inner cynic would be the first to harumph, one only has to look at FX's "Fargo" to see that shows spun off acclaimed (or otherwise) movies don't have to be bad (though they often are). And while Gilliam has nothing to do with this, the show's creators insist they are taking the premise of his future world flick about viruses and paranoia, into a different direction.

“It’s a complete reimagining,” co-executive producer Terry Matalas said (via THR). “We were all big fans of the original film and had a deep love and respect for the material. We didn’t want to just redo what the movie does. We wanted it to be grounded and closer to a thriller but that’s not to say we won't play with tone.” Okay fair game, but what does the first trailer tell us? Well, the plot is very similar—man travels to past to eradicate plague—and there is general vibe that seems similar, which is hardly surprising, but if the series is looking to stake out its own claim on the material, it might have to work a bit harder.

Boomers may be a huge demographic slice — years ago population experts noted that birth rates skyrocketed beginning in 1946 after the soldiers returned from World War II and stayed at high levels until a precipitous drop in 1965. Still, people born within that timespan share a lot of cultural icons. Among them: Movies we loved when we first saw them and will watch again and again on the TCM channel (or Netflix streaming).

Are movies still worth the money?

I love going to the movies. And it may surprise the folks who know me as a life-long penny pincher that I splurge on the overpriced popcorn and other concession items. (My favorite theater has a tasty burger and fries combo.)

But I’ve drawn the line on paying an extra $3 for 3-D. I’ve also become much more selective in the movies I’ll see. If I’m going to spend $11.50 for a movie, I want to have fun and not be sent home depressed. That’s why I haven’t seen “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” just yet. I liked the first installment, but the previews for the second film in the series are just, well, too darn serious. Really it’s gloomy. It’s summer. I want to have fun.
