Pro-Israel Hollywood Speaks Out

Many celebrities recently have voiced their concern for innocents dying in Gaza. The Giver: conservative parable or a Hollywood film like any other?

In June 1992, the screenwriter Jonathan R Reynolds published a letter in the New York Times complaining of Hollywood’s liberal bias. “I defy you to name a movie, primetime network television series, or made-for-television movie that espouses any sort of intelligent conservative position,” it read. He exhorted the paper to send a journalist to meet with studio executives to pitch a film which held conservative values at its core. He ended the letter, ominously, saying that “historically, the pendulum will swing back sooner or later.”

If you’ve been reading conservative blogs this week, you would be excused for thinking that this moment had come. In The Giver, released on Friday, the rightwing commentariat has found a Hollywood film which they can wholeheartedly embrace.

How Frank Miller Became Hollywood's Dark Knight

The movies kill Frank Miller. No really. Every time his scrawny frame turns up on the big screen, it winds up on a slab, whether it’s undergoing an unorthodox tracheotomy in Daredevil or giving a fatal confession in Sin City.

Behind the lens, the superstar comic book creator has breathed life into the multiplex, with huge flicks out this year, even as his lofty place in the comic book world – an industry whose horizons he exploded with his seminal ‘80s work – has fallen into disrepute. But there’s a reason that Hollywood now bleeds ink – with comic book movies now regularly among the years biggest grossers – and the rat-faced guy with the goddamn cranky politics is a big part of that.
