Pro-Israel Hollywood Speaks Out

Many celebrities recently have voiced their concern for innocents dying in Gaza. Unfortunately, since the entertainment biz leans heavily to the left, they do so by turning a blind eye to Hamas’ responsibility and unfairly bashing Israel. But there is more support for Israel in Hollywood than one might suspect, and more and more conservative stars are daring to express that support unabashedly.

Kirk Douglas Remembers Lauren Bacall: She Was My "Lucky Charm"

The legendary actor, who knew the late actress as "Betty," credits her for bringing him to the attention of Hollywood and inspiring him to help others

With the loss of Lauren Bacall, whom we all called "Betty," a meaningful part of my history has been extinguished.

Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, Metrico, Hohokum and Road Not Taken

METRICO

Released on Aug. 5

Developed by Digital Dreams

For PlayStation Vita

Rated E (Everyone); mild fantasy violence

Every puzzle game walks a fine line between posing a challenge and frustrating players. Metrico, a puzzle game for Sony’s Vita mobile console that’s occasionally a victim of its own novelty, toes this line more delicately than many of its peers.

The Giver: conservative parable or a Hollywood film like any other?

In June 1992, the screenwriter Jonathan R Reynolds published a letter in the New York Times complaining of Hollywood’s liberal bias. “I defy you to name a movie, primetime network television series, or made-for-television movie that espouses any sort of intelligent conservative position,” it read. He exhorted the paper to send a journalist to meet with studio executives to pitch a film which held conservative values at its core. He ended the letter, ominously, saying that “historically, the pendulum will swing back sooner or later.”

If you’ve been reading conservative blogs this week, you would be excused for thinking that this moment had come. In The Giver, released on Friday, the rightwing commentariat has found a Hollywood film which they can wholeheartedly embrace.

Edinburgh comedy awards 2014 shortlist: why Liam Williams should win

I loved Williams’s subterranean hour of nihilistic Gen-Y standup – and I’d have welcomed an appearance on the shortlist for his group Sheeps

So the Foster’s Edinburgh comedy award shortlist is out – and it contains few surprises. James Acaster is there for the third year running for his show Recognise – and repeat nominees (Russell Kane, Al Murray) have often come good in the end. Wig-wearing oddball John Kearns gets a nod – a rare example of a best newcomer following up immediately with a best show nomination. And on this year’s newcomer’s list, south Londoner Dane Baptiste becomes one of very few (the first?) black British comedians to appear on either list.

Robin Williams: One of the Great Comedy Recording Artists

In the days since Robin Williams’ passing, there has been a lot said about his incredible acting career, with many headlines beginning with the words “Oscar winner…”. This is of course for good reason, as Williams was easily one of the most versatile actors of our time, bouncing effortlessly from dramatic to comedic roles, succeeding in anything he took on. He is as beloved for his Academy Award-winning performance in Good Will Hunting (to say nothing of his other nominations) as for his turn as the Genie in Aladdin, if not more so.

The psychology of comedy: where humour and psychosis overlap

New research shows that comedians have a remarkable amount in common with people who have schizophrenia or manic depression – and that this could be what makes them funny

"Many people say that comics are psychopaths," says the standup Jason Byrne, who should know what he's talking about after almost two decades in the business. "We put this front on of being a normal person but in our shows we're closer to our actual personality."

How Comedy Central one of TV's best networks in two years

Comedy Central is on one hell of a hot streak.

Since it debuted Key & Peele, TV's best sketch show, in 2012, the network has reeled off must-watch series after must-watch series. One of those shows, Nathan For You, ends its second season tonight, which makes this as good a time as any to note just how strong Comedy Central's original programming has been for the last couple of years. These nine shows mean the channel always has something worth watching.

Nominees announced for Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards

Should Gogglebox's George be in the Celebrity Big Brother House?

George Gilbey's transition from ordinary viewer to celebrity contestant may ruin his likability, says Ryan Love

Gogglebox charmed the nation with its simple format; ordinary people watching television. We could all find someone to relate to from grumpy Liverpudlian pensioner Leon Bernicoff and his eye-rolling wife June to the wine-sipping Steph and Dom Parker.

Celebrity Fragrances Add to Slide at Elizabeth Arden

So much for the sweet smell of success.

Elizabeth Arden, the beauty company, blamed its celebrity fragrance lines featuring Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift, among others, for a steep drop in sales in the fiscal fourth quarter.

Its earnings report delivered a bleak picture — recording Arden’s worst quarterly decline in a decade — for a company that has tried to appeal to a younger clientele by teaming up with pop stars and by retooling some of its signature Red Door salons. Along with “Someday,” a soft, musky scent in Mr. Bieber’s line, Elizabeth Arden also has fragrances from the rapper Nicki Minaj and the former teenage idol Britney Spears.

Celebrity Big Brother: Benefits Street's Black Dee blasts selling out

Former friend Samora Roberts reacted with anger to the latest success of her former James Turner Street neighbour

Benefits Street's Black Dee has accused White Dee of "selling out"’ after she walked into the Celebrity Big Brother house and pocketed an estimated £100,000.
Deirdre Kelly took her place amongst contestants on the reality TV show and immediately became one of the favourites to win.

Celebrity Big Brother 2014 line-up

The fresh batch of fame-hungry celebrities has entered the Celebrity Big Brother house, and what an eclectic bunch they are.

From transgender boxing promoter Kellie Maloney to Benefits Street’s White Dee and TOWIE’s Lauren Goodger, this series looks set to be full of high drama, tension, and the inevitable very silly moments.
Host Emma Willis has promised us “countless twists, turns and tough tasks” as the contestants’ stamina and tolerance are tested to the limit.

Robin Williams' Death Sparks Shortage of Comedian's Movies

BUCKTOWN — If you're looking to rent or buy a copy of "Dead Poets Society" or other movies starring Robin Williams, chances are you'll end up empty-handed due to a huge demand for his movies at local stores and nationally after the comedian took his own life last week.

"We are averaging around five or six requests a day," said John Davies, a clerk at Odd Obsession Movies, 1822 N. Milwaukee Ave., in Bucktown.
Before Williams' death, Davies said he couldn't "recall any requests" for Williams' movies at the rental shop, which specializes in rare movies but does offer some of the more mainstream comedies starring Williams.
Davies said that on the day after Williams' death, a copy of the comedian's "Live on Broadway" 2002 standup special that was in the store's $5 sales bin was stolen.

Also premiering in that space is The 50 Year Argument, directed by Martin Scorsese and David Tedeschi, about The New York Review of Books, and Julie Taymor’s film adaptation of her staging of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, shot in Brooklyn last year.

Why Boarding Ruining Movies Padding Blockbusters A-List Cameos

Johnny Depp made $1 million for a week of Into the Woods. Meryl phoned in her turn in The Giver. Boarding, or flying in big actors to shoot for a few days, is bad for the big picture.

Video: Texting is really hard to show in movies

Texting and tweeting are a fundamental part of our everyday lives. Hunching over our phones and tapping with our fingers has become second nature to us. What we don't often think about, though, is how that looks to an outside observer, or how a director and actor would try to depict this action in the movie.

Quite simply, it's hard — harder than you think. It's really easy to make texting, tweeting, and the internet look dopey or unrealistic:

How Frank Miller Became Hollywood's Dark Knight

The movies kill Frank Miller. No really. Every time his scrawny frame turns up on the big screen, it winds up on a slab, whether it’s undergoing an unorthodox tracheotomy in Daredevil or giving a fatal confession in Sin City.

Behind the lens, the superstar comic book creator has breathed life into the multiplex, with huge flicks out this year, even as his lofty place in the comic book world – an industry whose horizons he exploded with his seminal ‘80s work – has fallen into disrepute. But there’s a reason that Hollywood now bleeds ink – with comic book movies now regularly among the years biggest grossers – and the rat-faced guy with the goddamn cranky politics is a big part of that.

East end meets west end in comedy hit

Things are usually far from rosy on Albert Square. Menacing words are hissed through gritted teeth, spats erupt spontaneously in the Queen Vic, and then of course there’s the odd murder plot every now and again.

It’s understandable, then, that three Eastenders alumni – Emma Barton, Jasmyn Banks and Shaun Williamson – have swapped drama in the street for chuckles on the stage with the live tour of the award-winning comedy One Man, Two Guvnors.

Critical condition: how comedy coverage at Edinburgh fringe

My colleague Lyn Gardner wrote last week about "a critical exodus from the fringe by the mainstream press", and I share her concerns. The issue is discussed in comedy circles too: I've spoken to several PRs who say they haven't had much to do at this year's fringe, because coverage in the mainstream press is so diminished. Of course, the flourishing of alternative critical voices online is an exciting development, but perhaps not yet an adequate replacement – as one confrontation last week made clear.
