Nudism/Naturism: Naked reality TV shows

Nudity without the nudity . . .

That seems to be the formula for some — if not all — the naked reality TV shows that are popping up these days.

I haven’t actually watched any of these shows, but I did see a report on Montreal’s CTV News on Sunday night about the new Dating Naked series. Yes, contestants are naked, and the idea seems to be about stripping away preconceived notions of nudity and socializing in one’s natural state.

Reality TV show Back to My Face in South Korea removes contestant’s plastic surgery

MANY TV shows in South Korea are dedicated to radical surgical transformations, yet a new show turns this on its head.

Surgically-enhanced people are being asked to take part in a reality TV show that wants contestants to go back under the knife and return to the face they once had, Netizen Buzz reported.

You must have had a minimum of 10 cosmetic surgical operations to take part.

The Most Ridiculous TV Show Concepts in Pop Culture

“Jonathan Chase, master of the secrets that divide man from animal, animal from man … Manimal.” Thus begins the 1983 NBC series Manimal, starring Simon MacCorkindale as a rich playboy who shapeshifts into various animals to help the police solve crimes. Manimal was canceled after only eight episodes, but gained a cult following thanks to its bonkers premise. Earlier this week, news broke that Will Ferrell and company are set on creating a “live-action/animation hybrid” feature film version of Manimal. The whole crime-fighting man-panther thing is pretty weird, but Manimal has a lot of company when it comes to television shows boasting absurd storylines. We uncovered some of the strangest, including a few classics and several you might have missed.

Those Who Kill: Show Cancellation Difficult for A&E Exec

At the recent Television Critics Association press tour, The Hollywood Reporter asked several network executives the same questions. One question was “What was the hardest conversation you’ve had to have in the past year?”

David McKillop, the Executive Vice President and General Manager of A&E Network, responded, “I had to cancel a scripted show [Those Who Kill] that we all believed in. That was the hardest conversation I’ve had to this day because I didn’t understand why it didn’t connect with audiences. That made that conversation that much more difficult.”

Box office report: 'Lucy' slays 'Hercules' with $44 million debut

Hercules‘s muscles were no match for Lucy‘s drug-enhanced brain at the box office this weekend. Audiences turned out in earnest to see the Scarlett Johansson thriller, which earned an expectation-shattering $44 million from 3,173 theaters in its first weekend.

Not only is it director Luc Besson’s biggest opening, Lucy is also a career high for Scarlett Johansson as a lead. Audiences for the original feature were evenly split between genders, 35 percent were under the age of 25, and 29 percent were Hispanic. But even though the EuropaCorp-produced, Universal-distributed project appealed to a wide demographic swath, those who did see the R-rated action film were a little less kind in the exit polls, slapping Lucy with a poor C+ Cinema Score.

Quentin Tarantino says 'The Hateful Eight' is on the way after all

Quentin Tarantino’s post-Civil War western The Hateful Eight will be a film after all.

After Gawker leaked pages from The Hateful Eight screenplay back in January, Tarantino filed a lawsuit against the media company and said he wouldn’t be turning the script into a movie because of the leak. He later amended that statement though, telling a crowd at a The Hateful Eight reading in April that he was actually working on new draft of the script. And Sunday, he announced at a Comic-Con panel that the movie is a go, Deadline reports.

DI MARIA WANTS UNITED MOVE (MAYBE)

Some wonderful guesswork on the part of numerous news outlets this morning regarding the future of Angel Di Maria.

With that in mind, they claim that Di Maria would instead prefer a £45million move to Manchester United.

The big names

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by Edinburgh, so it’s always good to book for a few reliable names in advance. May we suggest Bridget Christie, who returns after winning the ultimate Edinburgh crown last year – the Foster’s Comedy Award – with An Ungrateful Woman (2-25 Aug, The Stand).

I’ve got this rep as a party boy, but the only show I’ve ever missed was when I had food poisoning from an Australian duck curry. I was puking buckets. The doc injected me with something, and I turned blue and started convulsing.” Did anyone think you were just in character? “They thought I was hungover.”

Heard the one about women on TV?

Not getting on the box means female comics don't earn the money to tour and hone their skills
Katy Brand's new novel, Brenda Monk is Funny, published this week, contains a very interesting theory about why men are more visible in comedy than women. She argues on the basis of pure economics.

Women are under-represented in TV comedy for a variety of reasons, the hackneyed "fear that women aren't funny" being one of them. Therefore, the fees available for being funny on television do not, broadly, go to women. So, aspirant female standups do not have the money to support the tours they should do to sharpen their material and become better known.
