Why brands need to think like entertainment companies – not just publishers

Brands are constantly told that they need to act like publishers when developing a brand marketing strategy. And some major brands – such as Red Bull – have indeed become media companies that still happen to sell FMCG products.

However, with the proven ability of entertainment content to establish a special emotional bond with consumers, marketers perhaps need to broaden their mindset further and start behaving like entertainment companies – not just publishers.

Garfunkel and Oates bring their naughty, doe-eyed comedy to IFC

Don’t be fooled by the twee.

Oh sure, they look doe-eyed and sweet, but Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci, the two actress/singer/comedians who comprise Garfunkel and Oates (Lindhome is Garfunkel and Micucci is Oates), are anything but.

These are after all, the women who wrote “The Loophole,” a raunchy little ode to doing an end-run around losing your virginity while still keeping your hormonal high school boyfriend happy. Many have been introduced to the duo through sex columnist Dan Savage’s podcast, “Savage Love.” Their work is reminiscent of the impish, subversive wit of Nellie McKay’s “Mother of Pearl,” but with a more foul-mouthed edge.

How an Irish comedian inspired an African stand-up to open D.C.’s next comedy club

D.C. comedian Ed Blaze loves to make people laugh, but finding a place to do so in D.C. has often been a challenge.

So after spending the past several years touring full time, the comic is refocusing on the District as he looks to open Metro Comedy D.C., a club in NoMa that would be the city’s second comedy-only venue.

Blaze and his team have launched a Kickstarter to help fund the project and are hoping to raise $50,000 by Sept. 19.

Comedian Reggie Watts part of first touring Oddball Comedy festival

In 2003, the last time the Observer spoke with Reggie Watts, he was fronting a jazz-inflected soul-rock combo called Maktub.

The jam-friendly group was known for seriously stirring tracks like the R&B-tinged single “Just Like Murder” and a psychedelic version of Led Zeppelin’s “No Quarter.”

But in 2004 Watts moved to New York’s Lower East Side to forge a solo career – in comedy.

Celebrity Magazine Sales Plummet on Newsstands

Celebrity magazines used to be the impulse purchase at the airport or the supermarket checkout line. But those impulses are apparently being resisted.

Data released Thursday by the Alliance for Audited Media showed celebrity magazines suffered mightily on the newsstand in the first half of 2014. Newsstand sales of People, InStyle and US Weekly dropped by nearly 15 percent in that time, compared with the same period in 2013. In Touch Weekly’s newsstand sales declined by 23.5 percent, Star Magazine by 21.8 percent and Life & Style Weekly by 21.7 percent. People StyleWatch suffered a 32.8 percent decline.

Celebrities are becoming a prominent fixture in the debate over K-12 education. This week Whoopi Goldberg used her platform on ABC's The View to
"To me, bad teachers don't do anybody any good. So the union needs to recognize that parents are not going to stand for it anymore," she said.

Is Swedish model Lykke Glommen Orlando's new flame?

What is going ON with Orlando Bloom lately? He's basically became Leonardo DiCapario of late, such are his ways with women and hanging about on yachts. And obviously there was the whole Justin Bieber punching thing, which is NOT what we expected from a man best known for playing a blonde and serene elf.

Anyway, he latest adventures have seen him cavorting with a hot 20 year-old Swedish model, Lykke Glommen, in Ibiza - shortly after the Justin Bieber altercation, and being pictured with another model, Erica Packer. Seriously, he's a total modelizer.

The Listener: TV Show Ending; No Season Six

You may recall that NBC started airing a Canadian series called The Listener during the summer of 2009. It didn’t perform well so the network cancelled the show but it continued to perform well and be renewed in Canada. It was later picked up by the ION cable channel here in the states.

CTV has now decided to end the show after five seasons and 65 episodes. The series finale of The Listener will air on CTV on August 18th. No word on when ION will air the last episode.

9 Super Gory TV Shows That (Almost) Make Us Want to Look Away (VIDEO)

It often seems like when it comes to blood, guts, and gross-outs, there's almost nothing that can't be shown on TV these days. A lot of horror series, procedurals, or shows that just are just chock full of violence are willing to offer what could often be described as stomach-churning.Though, audiences don't seem to mind the push for more gore.

TV shows trump movies on Netflix and other services

TV shows have become even more popular than movies among subscribers to Netflix and other online video services, a new survey finds.

When it comes to what viewers watch on Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and other so-called over-the-top services, TV series accounted for about three-fourths of titles viewed, according to the survey from GfK, a market research firm with offices in New York, London and Nuremberg, Germany. Movies narrow the gap when it comes to time spent watching, since they are longer than TV episodes.

Life and Loves of a Brooklyn Bank Robber

It turns out that the true story bit about “Dog Day Afternoon” was, well, pretty true. That’s one of the jaw droppers in “The Dog,” an absorbing, rollicking documentary about John Wojtowicz, who’s best known as the guy Al Pacino performed, with heart, soul and a river of flop sweat, in “Dog Day Afternoon.” In Sidney Lumet’s magnificently squalid 1975 classic, Mr. Pacino plays Sonny Wortzik, whose new career as Clyde Barrow goes south as soon as he pulls out a gun in a Brooklyn bank. Thwarted by bad planning and legions of cops, Sonny eventually ends up in cuffs. The same pretty much happened to Mr. Wojtowicz, except that he was immortalized in a Hollywood masterwork.

Superhero Overload? 8 Major Comicbook Movies Planned for 2017

While much has been written about 2015 as a perfect storm of tentpoles, including sequels to “Star Wars,” “The Avengers,” “Mission: Impossible,” “The Hunger Games,” “Jurassic Park,” “Fast & Furious” and “Terminator,” 2017 is shaping up to become a showdown of superhero movies.

Disney’s Marvel Studios, Warner Bros.’ DC Entertainment and 20th Century Fox so far have plans to release seven films featuring comicbook-based crime fighters combined that year, a record. Sony is developing an eighth that has not yet been dated.

'Batman v Superman' release date moved up as 9 new DC movies dated

Batman and Superman won't be facing off against Captain America after all. Warner Bros. has moved the release date of Zack Snyder's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" up to March 25, 2016, after originally scheduling the superhero movie to open against Marvel's "Captain America 3" on May 6 of that year.

Here’s a detailed list of upcoming superhero comic book movies between now and 2020

Great Caesar’s ghost, there are a lot of comic book movies coming out over the next six years!

Movies and TV shows based on comic book characters are far from new, but recently it has felt more like like a flood rather than a trickle. Now more than ever, all these various heroes and heroines are coming together under one production roof (whenever possible), leading to a sense of connectivity rarely seen outside of … well, comics.

Hey Hollywood, why so many sequels?

If that film looks familiar, there's a reason: Hollywood relies more than ever on the cash cow that is the safe-bet sequel.
From X-Men to Transformers to Planet of the Apes, this year's blockbusters increasingly are sequels - and sequels of sequels - to escape evermore unwelcome financial risks.

"Sequels are like safety nets for studios and investors; they consistently deliver the most potent box office punch," says Jeff Bock, a spokesman for industry tracker Exhibitor Relations, which keeps the numbers at US and Canadian box offices.

Why Female Action Vehicles Won't Break Hollywood's Boys Club (Opinion)

The recasting of male-centric film franchises with women is a welcome development, but should hardly be touted as groundbreaking progress.

The phrase “total reboot” isn’t exactly an oxymoron, but when applied to the Hollywood practice of dusting off pre-used premises and characters, it’s something of an exaggeration. Poised to join the recycling queue of movies based on movies are a couple of projects propelled by a gender switcheroo: Bridesmaids director Paul Feig is in talks for an all-female retread of 1984’s Ghostbusters, and Sylvester Stallone is working on an Expendables spinoff featuring female operatives, potentially starring  — if Stallone gets his way — Sigourney Weaver, and called (really?) The Expendabelles.

The Evil Genius of Kim Kardashian: Hollywood

Kim Kardashian is my matchmaker. She’s just set me up with a cute guy named Mitchell, who’s a writer but “not one of those nerdy sitcom writers,” as she puts it. I meet Mitchell at Panino, a trendy restaurant in Beverly Hills, and opt to “flirt” with him. But when I go to order us a bottle of “fancy wine,” it turns out I’m “too tired” to do it. But I don’t feel tired! In order to finish the date and achieve my goal of being Stunningly Attractive, I have to get more energy.

That means I must either whittle away an entire hour or head to the Star Shop. There, $4.99 buys 50 stars, allowing me to continue my romantic evening. Or I could pick the Best Value, and pony up $99.99 in real-life dollars for 1,250 stars. That’s a hundred bucks that could be spent on actual fancy wine. Or clothes. Or rent. Mitchell, like all good things, can wait.

Men accused of attacks on strangers with belt, car in West Hollywood

Two men were in custody Thursday after a bizarre assault in West Hollywood that authorities say began when one of them allegedly took off his belt and hit two women who laughed at him.

After hitting the women, Los Angeles County sheriff's officials said, the man got into a waiting car that then intentionally drove into a man and a woman, injuring one critically, sheriff's officials said.

Sheriff’s officials identified the men Thursday afternoon as Hector Hernandez, 29, of Whittier, and Joseph Osuna, 23, of Bakersfield.

Movie review: It's called Entertainment but only if that was enough!

Movie: Entertainment
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Tamannaah Bhatia, Sonu Sood, Prakash Raj and Johnny Lever
Director: Sajid - Farhad
Rating: 4 Star Rating: Recommended

Before making Entertainment, directors Sajid-Farhad have contributed quite a bit in the slapstick genre, to name a few Golmaal Returns, Golmaal 3, Housefull 2, Bol Bachchan and even the epic flop Himmatwala, they have written all these film. Hence, subtlety is something I was obviously not expecting.  The humour in this film touches a new low. Dialogues like 'Jaisi Karni Waisi Mamta Kulkarni' and DNA has a whole new meaning, here it means 'Daddy's najayaz aulad'. There are many gems like these in this two-hour-twenty-minute film.

Entertainment movie review

Writers-turned-director duo - Sajid-Farhad, is marking directorial debut with the flick, which promises if not laugh out loud doze to comedy-seeker then at least smiles on their faces.

Stars- Akshay Kumar, Tamannaah Bhatia, Krushna Abhishek, Sonu Sood, Prakash Raj

Director- Sajid-Farhad

Music Director- Sachin-Jigar

They barely miss a chance in the flick to chuckle us. Even if the gags are old and come out of forwarded SMSes and already relished comedy shows, they still carry that temperament to allow your facial muscles to flex.
