Looking for a good movie this weekend? Here are the 4 latest releases and reviews from our movie critics Claudia Puig and Scott Bowles.
Guardians of the Galaxy
It may have been a lesser-known Marvel property, but Guardians is recognizably winning summer fare. No need to be a sci-fi nerd or a comic book geek to enjoy it, the witty banter and charismatic characters will delight general audiences. Guardians is perfectly pitched escapist fun. Get On Up
It's hard not to feel good as Chadwick Boseman's embodies Godfather of Soul James Brown in Get On Up. His performance is so masterful that viewers forget they're watching an actor play the R&B singer. (*** out of four stars)
Calvary
The film offers a fascinating look at contemporary attitudes toward the priesthood and Catholicism with a climactic face-off that will leave viewers shaken. A deeply ethical clergyman is vilified for the evil done by his brethren, and audiences are left to ponder and sort out the mess.
Child of God
This Gothic creep-fest features a deranged title character, a necrophiliac/rapist/serial killer. The monstrous lunatic — and the lurid movie that contains him belong deep in the bowels of Hell. Watch the trailer here. (* 1/2 out of four stars)
