A TV Show About Online Videos Shows Us We’re In A Weird Place With Content Right Now

A TV show devoted entirely to showing nothing but online videos is now the No. 1 syndicated new show in the nation. You may have seen RightThisMinute on HLN or one of your local channels: It’s on most Cox, Scripps and Raycom stations coast to coast and will soon be syndicated throughout about 91 percent of the country.

The show gets over 2 million viewers for each half-hour episode. Comparing some of the long-standing syndicated shows like the ever popular Judge Judy to RTM is like comparing apples to oranges, but it’s more popular than new shows with big names like Bethany and also Queen Latifah’s new talk show.

Sarah Palin’s new TV network shows just how far her star has fallen

Palin was one of the biggest TV personalities of the decade. What went wrong?

Credit where it’s due:  Sarah Palin, who has just announced the launch of her subscription-based online video channel, is one of the most skilled, and resilient, TV stars of the past decade.

After her resignation as governor of Alaska in 2009, Palin pivoted seamlessly to television, where she served in an official capacity as a Fox News contributor and in an unofficial capacity as a shameless entertainer ready to take any gig; she showed up in the audience of “Dancing With the Stars” week after week as her daughter competed, and guest-hosted “Today.” She had her own reality show on TLC, too. But no matter how often and widely she touted her on-air persona, her particular brand of charisma proved a little too spiky to really work in established TV contexts.

Let’s Make This Official: The Post-Credit Scenes Aren’t Part of Marvel Movies

Guardians of the Galaxy comes out this weekend and according to director James Gunn, audiences who see it opening night will be the first to glimpse the post-credits tease at the end of the film, whatever it may be. Logic suggests it will have something to do with Avengers: Age of Ultron, the next Marvel movie, but perhaps it will look even further ahead, much as the last Avengers movie did in setting up the villain Thanos (who then wasn’t even cast for two years). Perhaps Gunn directed this teaser, perhaps not; but the fact that it hasn’t been included in any preview screenings suggests that it doesn’t have much to do with the film it’s attached to. So can we finally all admit that these things aren’t really part of any movie and instead just serve as artful little ads?

Taradise Lost: Tara Reid’s Sharknado Comeback

The Sharknado star and notorious party girl gets older, and wiser — maybe

Tara Reid did not expect Sharknado to be her big comeback, but she’s learned better than to try to predict when opportunity will knock. She is 38 years old now and she has, as she often says, been working her entire life. Though she is lean and striking, there’s something a little bit brittle about her. She’s gone crinkly at the eyes, but her teeth are still gleaming, movie-star white.

Here's Why Marvel Didn't Confirm Any New Movie Titles

It was a borderline tragedy to Marvel fans this weekend, as the company only announced one film on their upcoming film slate (Guardians Of The Galaxy 2) despite eight release dates hovering on the horizon. Fans know to expect Doctor Strange given the recent hiring of director Scott Derrickson, and there's certainly room for a third Avengers, with writers hired for Thor 3. That leaves four release dates without titles. Why weren't they confirmed? The issue is a simple one: Marvel doesn't know what these movies are either.

In some ways, Marvel has revolutionized blockbuster filmmaking. All it takes is a small last-minute addition to a movie and suddenly the Marvel world spiderwebs even further. Samuel L. Jackson's end-of-credits cameo as Nick Fury in Iron Man was an afterthought. By 2011, the Red Skull would control the Tesseract, just the first in a series of magical MacGuffins teasing the arrival of Thanos, spread out over multiple films. Marvel has mastered release date schedule management, striking early and often by nabbing the best available weekends with just the promise of another Marvel blockbuster that adds another piece to the larger Marvel mosaic.

There's no formula to guarantee super-hit movies: Salman Khan

Superstar Salman Khan, whose movies have repeatedly grossed over Rs 100 crores, says there is no formula of making super-hit and money-minting movies and filmmakers should also focus on content.

"When people talk about numbers, they are very generous and say this movie will cross Rs 300 crores, Rs 400 crores and even Rs 500 crores. But then the films are big disasters," Salman said while talking to reporters here through a video link from India.

The 48-year old superstar, who was accompanied by his Kick co-star Jacqueline Fernandez and author Chetan Bhagat, said till the time a movie is released and reaches the audiences, "there is no guarantee of any movie being a super-duper hit or a flop."

Netflix adds 'The Killing' Season 4 in August, plus 20 new movies

Netflix giveth, and Netflix taketh away.
Netflix has announced its latest streaming offerings coming to the service starting August 1, 2014, as well as titles on their way out as of the end of July. There's a little something for everyone among the new content, with plenty of dramas and romance movies, but the big news is the highly anticipated fourth and final season of "The Killing."

The streaming service is quickly becoming known more for its original, quality TV series than its catalog of on-demand movies. Major hits like "House of Cards" and "Orange is the New Black" are transforming how subscribers see the service. Those subscribers have turned "binge watching" entire new seasons of a show into a mainstream practice. Five years ago, such a thing would have been unthinkable.

Hollywood human trafficking summit slams Roman Polanski, says stars can do more

LOS ANGELES –  If Hollywood wants to do more than give lip service to the issue of human trafficking and a worldwide pandemic of child rape, it can start by disowning Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski.

That’s what a number of domestic violence and human trafficking survivors said at a summit held Thursday in Beverly Hills ahead of Wednesday’s first United Nations World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.

The event at the Crescent Hotel was organized to encourage entertainment industry leaders to play an important role in eradicating the scourge by promoting ways to prevent human trafficking and by educating the public about its existence.

Hollywood joins forces with Kodak to keep movie film alive

Tarantino, Abrams, and Nolan lobbied studios to strike new deal

After lobbying by directors including Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, and J.J. Abrams, movie studios are negotiating a deal with Kodak that would secure the company's ability to keep producing motion picture film. The Wall Street Journal reports that the agreement is likely to see studios commit to buying from Kodak in set quantities for upcoming years regardless of their plans to actually shoot movies in the format. Kodak is now the sole major provider of movie film following Fujifilm's exit from the market in 2013.

The rise of professional digital cinema cameras from the likes of Arri and RED have hastened Kodak's predicament; the WSJ says sales have fallen 96 percent over the past eight years. But many in the industry have strong feelings for the declining format. J.J. Abrams is shooting Star Wars: Episode VII on film, in contrast to the digital-heavy prequel trilogy, and Colin Trevorrow's Jurassic World will be filmed in both 35mm and 65mm.

Comic-Con trailer paradise for Hollywood's 2014 movie blockbusters

San Diego's Comic-Con International has become a huge deal in Hollywood in recent years, with studios falling over themselves to pique the interest of the legions of comic-book fans who attend. The good news is that you don't have to travel to southern California to get a taste of 2014's blockbuster wannabes: a slew of trailers that debuted inside the San Diego Convention Centre's gargantuan Hall H have now hit the web – and there's no need to dress up like Xena the warrior princess to watch them.

Universal Studios Hollywood unveils Halloween Horror Nights 2014 mazes

Year in and year out, Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood is the best haunted theme park event in Southern California and quite possibly the country.

For that reason, I hold Universal Studios to a higher standard when the movie theme park unveils its new lineup of haunted mazes and scare zones each season.

Known for its always fresh and ever-changing collection of movie studio-quality mazes, I find it curious that Horror Nights has decided to bring back The Walking Dead as the marquee maze for the third straight year.

100-mph art school pitcher: Future star or Hollywood hype job?

SAN FRANCISCO — In one of their craziest scouting experiences, the Minnesota Twins have reached a deal with a 24-year-old pitching prospect who has thrown 100-mile-per-hour fastballs but has never been drafted.

Brandon Poulson was pitching earlier this month for the Healdsburg Prune Packers in a collegiate summer league. His manager was Joey Gomes, the brother of big leaguer Jonny Gomes.

Now the Twins are about to give him $250,000.

“It’s a great story,” Twins West Coast scouting supervisor Sean Johnson said Tuesday. “This kid came out of nowhere.”

Liverpool FC transfer gossip: Borini move to Black Cats back on; Agger edges closer to Barca; Swans at odds over Bony

Fabio Borini’s move from Liverpool to Sunderland could be back on, according to the Daily Mail.
The Italian, who enjoyed a successful loan spell at the Stadium of Light last season, was the subject of a £14m bid from the Black Cats earlier this month. When it was accepted, it appeared Borini was on his way to Sunderland - but instead he joined the Reds on their summer tour to America, only to injure his shoulder and return to the UK.

Although the injury is a complicating factor, the Mail reports Borini has since spoken to Sunderland while boss Gus Poyet remains keen to sign the 23-year-old.

Daniel Agger is nearing a move to Barcelona, according to The Independent.

Everton FC transfer gossip: Chelsea demand £30m for Lukaku; Blues on alert over Grenier; Italian target heads for Milan not Merseyside

Everton could be put off a move for Romelu Lukaku by Chelsea’s £30m asking price, according to The Express.

The paper claims the Blues are putting together a bid that consists of £23m up front, plus bonuses.

It is thought that Chelsea are demanding the full £30m up front for the Belgian striker. This has reportedly scuppered Wolfsburg's plans of signing Lukaku this summer.

The Express also claim Everton are among a clutch of clubs monitoring Lyon’s Clement Grenier.

The midfielder has skipped training and been left out of his club’s squad for their Europa League tie against Mlada Boleslav.

The Paris Saint-Germain star has been a transfer for the London clubs as both the Blues and the Gunners are reportedly looking to bring the forward to the Premier League in the ongoing transfer window.

They suggest that the Ligue 1 champions are willing to allow the Argentine international leave for around £18m. PSG have dropped a hint that Lavezzi could be on his way out of the Parc des Princes after not including him in the club's latest advertisement of their new kit.

Robert Pattinson on Kristen Stewart Drama: “Sh*t Happens… It’s Normal!”

Robert Pattinson jokes about his “love child,” shares a mortifying story about sex sweat, and gets candid about his romance with Kristen Stewart in the September issue of Esquire UK.

As Gossip Cop can attest, a lot — A LOT — has been said about Pattinson’s relationship with Stewart, which was infamously complicated by her cheating with Rupert Sanders.

In his Esquire cover story, Pattinson takes a light tone to the subject that has fascinated the tabloids and fans alike.

“Sh*t happens, you know?” he says, reportedly laughing. “It’s just young people… it’s normal! And honestly, who gives a sh*t?”

'Wonderful, but frightening'

REGGAE star on-the-rise Chronixx is still the subject of conversation following his performances on NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last Tuesday and a subsequent concert in New York's Central Park at the weekend.

In a recent interview with National Public Radio (NPR) in the United States, the Here Comes Trouble singer noted that he was nervous when performing on the late-night TV show.

"It was wonderful, but frightening, because I knew that everyone in Jamaica was watching, and if you mess up, you mess up in front of your whole family. My mother was watching, my grandmother was watching — it was scary," he told NPR.

Guilt may spoil restorative effects of entertainment

People who play video games or watch television to unwind after a hard day may end up feeling worse about themselves, not better, says a new study.

Although enjoying something pleasurable can restore “vitality” after a draining bout of demanding work, researchers found that users of entertainment media will get less benefit if they see the activity as procrastination rather than rest.

The spent state following a period of self-control to complete a difficult job is known as ego-depletion, according to the study authors, and people in that condition are likely to crave pleasurable foods and easy, mindless entertainment.

Holly Walsh: ‘I build my comedy block-by-block like Lego’

Standup is a great way to process bad things that happen to you. I love filling a routine with ideas and mini-punchlines

Smashing my arm jumping off Worthing pier was definitely one of the best things that happened to my career. I say “career” – standup is more of a hobby that got out of hand. But it was the first time that I started writing about something personal to me.

Don’t get me wrong, I would much rather the accident hadn’t happened, but in terms of generating material it was very useful. Maybe it was the fact that I sort of switched my brain off for six weeks to recover. Maybe it’s because the ingredients of the accident were so comic (Bird Man competition/homemade helicopter/rescued by a man dressed as Rambo). Maybe it’s because it forced me to start writing about my own experiences, rather than generic stuff. I’m lucky that I do this job – I can process bad things that happen to me through my work.

Punch Lines, Commentary and Rants

Patton Oswalt, Morgan Murphy and Others Have Comedy Specials

Last week Weird Al Yankovic’s “Mandatory Fun” became the first comedy album to go to the top of the Billboard charts since the early 1960s. Back then, when the comedy club was still in its infancy, this was more common. Allan Sherman and Bob Newhart both reached No. 1. But if such albums were more prominent then, the scale of the current comedy boom, as well as the many formats available for distribution, mean that there have probably never been more funny specials available than right now. Weird Al’s success may be a sign of comedy’s ascent, but the volume of specials released online, on streaming services and even on vinyl represents a more significant shift in this fertile art form. Here are a few 2014 releases (all available on iTunes) worth your attention.

CBS' Jim Gaffigan Comedy Moves to TV Land With Series Order

Repeat episodes of "The Gaffigan Show" will air on fellow Viacom-owned cabler Comedy Central a week after their debut.
Jim Gaffigan's long-gestating semi-autobiographical family comedy has landed at a new home: TV Land.

TV Land has handed out a 10-episode series order to The Gaffigan Show, the single-camera semi-autobiographical comedy from Sony Pictures Television that stars Gaffigan as a happily married and harried New York father of five — which he is in real life. The series will debut in 2015 on TV Land, with fellow Viacom-owned cable network Comedy Central airing episodes of the series a week after they debut. The deal capitalizes on Gaffigan's audience at Comedy Central, where he has been the subject of multiple stand-up specials.

The Alternative Comedy Experience, Comedy Central - TV review: Women can stand up and be counted

If you're watching a live event on television, then it's not really "live", is it?
With none of the atmosphere of the venue and none of the production values of a studio or pre-recorded programme, you're left with the worst of both worlds. The Alternative Comedy Experience (Comedy Central) is a happy exception to this rule. Both content and style make this Stewart Lee-curated half-hour TV's only acceptable substitute for getting off the sofa and going to a gig.

This is the second year that Lee and some of the crew from BBC2's Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle have set up at Edinburgh's intimate 140-seat venue, the Stand. The result is a kind of overview of all the brilliant comedians and stand-up styles which, for a variety of reasons, are rarely seen on television. Last night, for instance, two out of four of the featured stand-ups were women – Josie Long and Susan Calman – a vast improvement on the token efforts at equal representation proffered by mainstream panel shows.

Venezuelans find solace in comedy amid economic travails

(Reuters) - A genie appears from a lamp in the hands of an astonished Venezuelan boy to declare: "You can ask for anything - except toilet paper!"

The world's highest inflation and shortages of basics from milk to toilet roll are really no laughing matter for Venezuelans, but they find solace in a thriving comedy scene lampooning the governance behind the economic strife.

Through cartoons like the genie, stand-up comedy, and online satire, humor has become a prominent and poignant form of criticism as mainstream media exercise more self-censorship.

"Despite oil at $100 a barrel, Venezuela is living through the worst economic crisis of its history ... It's the Midas touch in reverse," stand-up comic Laureano Marquez told Reuters before entertaining a 600-strong audience at a Caracas theater.

6 obscene celebrity rants in support of Israel’s assault on Gaza

Joan Rivers has called for the Palestinian region to be "wiped out," while Bill Maher likens Hamas to a crazy woman

The Israeli assault on Gaza has sparked intense, and often vitriolic, debate across the U.S., and the entertainment business is no exception. A number of Hollywood celebrities have come out in protest of the bombardment of the people of Gaza by Israeli air strikes and artillery, a signal that the mainstream discourse in the U.S., Israel’s number-one ally, is shifting. But the opposing side has also come out swinging.

Pro-Israel celebrities have voiced support for the assault, lambasting other stars in the same business for critiquing the state they support. The high-profile back and forth is a window into how polarizing Israel has become after decades of largely uncritical support in the U.S.

Celebrities Struggle in Prepaid-Card Business

Fortune Eludes Cards Backed by the Famous as Competition from Big Banks Mounts and Fees Come Under Pressure
Celebrities are having a tough time making it big in the prepaid-card business.

Financial-advice personality Suze Orman and basketball legend Magic Johnson have shuttered their prepaid-card ventures. Rapper Lil Wayne has stopped accepting applications for his Young Money cards in the last few weeks, according to people familiar with the matter. Other celebrities, such as the Kardashians, have left the business as well after being criticized for charging high fees.

Their retreat shows how specialized cards endorsed by a single celebrity often struggle to compete with plain-vanilla cards issued by big banks that are pitched to a broader swath of consumers.

Big Brother 2014: ‘Excited’ Luisa Zissman is going back into the house to join Ashleigh, Helen and the rest of the gang

Luisa Zissman is going back in to the Big Brother and we’re predicting pure, full-blown anarchy.
Big Brother dropped off our radars a bit after we lost Biannca, Danielle and Kimberly in one well swoop and Channel 5 producers are obviously hoping Luisa is the woman to get the show back on the road.

The ‘excited’ Bit On The Psych presenter is returning to the house as part of a task, which we can only assume involves a lot of nakedness/and or harsh truths.

Nudism/Naturism: Naked reality TV shows

Nudity without the nudity . . .

That seems to be the formula for some — if not all — the naked reality TV shows that are popping up these days.

The Most Ridiculous TV Show Concepts in Pop Culture

“Jonathan Chase, master of the secrets that divide man from animal, animal from man … Manimal.” Thus begins the 1983 NBC series Manimal, starring Simon MacCorkindale as a rich playboy who shapeshifts into various animals to help the police solve crimes. Manimal was canceled after only eight episodes, but gained a cult following thanks to its bonkers premise. Earlier this week, news broke that Will Ferrell and company are set on creating a “live-action/animation hybrid” feature film version of Manimal. The whole crime-fighting man-panther thing is pretty weird, but Manimal has a lot of company when it comes to television shows boasting absurd storylines. We uncovered some of the strangest, including a few classics and several you might have missed.

Those Who Kill: Show Cancellation Difficult for A&E Exec

At the recent Television Critics Association press tour, The Hollywood Reporter asked several network executives the same questions. One question was “What was the hardest conversation you’ve had to have in the past year?”

David McKillop, the Executive Vice President and General Manager of A&E Network, responded, “I had to cancel a scripted show [Those Who Kill] that we all believed in. That was the hardest conversation I’ve had to this day because I didn’t understand why it didn’t connect with audiences. That made that conversation that much more difficult.”
